Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences

The faculty and staff of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences are a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in anthropology, community health, epidemiology, health communications, health policy, health promotion, higher education, psychology, and sociology. Together, we view health through the lens that all people should have access to healthy places to live, work and play.

Our mission is to improve health equity throughout Central Indiana and beyond.

How are we tackling our mission?

  • Partnering with community members and organizations to work on issues of importance to them.
  • Focusing not only on significant public health issues, but also working to understand and tackle the root causes.
  • Training collaborative and thoughtful practitioners of community health through our BSPH in Community Health.
  • Preparing leaders in disease prevention, health promotion, and social determinants of health through our MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The Social and Behavioral Sciences department is comprised of a renowned, award-winning faculty with research interests focused on important local and global health issues, including breast cancer, coping with stress, chronic disease health disparities, family health, risky sex behaviors, the complex relationship between place and health and primary prevention of chronic disease.
