The Department of Epidemiology in the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health (FSPH) is looking for scholars who will contribute to our commitment to engage the city, state, nation and beyond through teaching, research and service, in consideration of the rich diversity of our campus and city as we prepare our graduates to enter and lead in an increasingly complex world.
The Department is currently recruiting for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in public health informatics at the rank of Assistant Professor. Primary responsibilities will be the development of a research agenda in public health informatics that aligns with the strategy of the school and department.
Faculty at FSPH are also expected to teach at least two courses at the graduate or undergraduate level as well as mentor trainees in the department’s graduate programs. The department currently offers an MPH degree with a concentration in public health informatics as well as a doctoral training program in public and population health informatics funded by the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Priority research areas of interest to the department and school include:
• Development of novel, advanced computational methods to analyze large population health data, especially administrative and electronic health data;
• Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to predict population health trends and outcomes;
• Development and implementation of informatics tools to support public health surveillance, especially the surveillance of cancers and non-communicable diseases;
• Implementation and evaluation of information exchange and systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); and
• Development and application of informatics methods and information systems to support public health’s response the opioid epidemic.
About the School and Department:
The mission of FSPH is to cultivate innovative, interdisciplinary, community engaged education, research and service and prepare leaders in public health and health care. Health is defined as the capacity to develop full human potential, not simply the absence of disease. In promoting the health of communities, FSPH emphasizes the prevention of disease and injury and recognizes the interconnectedness of the physical environment and ecosystem to the health of the community. Established in 2012, FSPH is fully accredited by CEPH and offers three PhD programs, an MPH with five concentrations, an MHA program, several graduate degrees, and BS degrees in Health Services Management and Public Health. Prior to 2012, the School was a department within the IU School of Medicine. Long-standing collaborations are in place with key community entities, including the Indiana State Health Department, the Marion County Public Health Department, the Regenstrief Institute, and a wide variety of community organizations and industry partners.
The Department of Epidemiology possesses a strong track record in NIH-funded research as well as extramural research funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Indiana State Department of Health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The department’s faculty are national and international experts in cancer, genetics, coronary heart disease, diabetes, nutrition, public health informatics, and public health practice.
In collaboration with the Regenstrief Institute, the Department co-leads a Program in Public Health Informatics. The program includes faculty from multiple departments in FSPH as well as other schools on the IUPUI campus who seek to improve public and population health through 1) development and dissemination of effective informatics methods, systems, tools, and evidence; 2) translation of evidence into real-world solutions for providers, health systems, and public health organizations; and 3) increased knowledge and awareness of public health informatics through education and training. The program includes a strategic partnership with the Indiana Health Information Exchange, which has enabled the development of resources including a registry of over 150,000 patients with traumatic brain injury, a registry of more than 6 million individuals tested for a sexually transmitted infection, and access to a statewide syndromic surveillance system. These assets aid faculty in conducting innovative as well as applied informatics research that benefits the health of Indiana residents.
About the Campus:
The FSPH is located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, Indiana. The IUPUI campus is the focal point of health sciences research and health professions education at IU, which includes the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and School of Dentistry. The IUPUI campus is also home to the Regenstrief Institute, an internationally respected health services and informatics research organization recognized for its role in improving quality of care, increasing efficiency of healthcare delivery, preventing medical errors and enhancing patient safety. Qualified candidates will be considered for an appointment at the Center for Biomedical Informatics.
The IU Melvin & Bren Simon Cancer Center, part of the IU Health System, is Indiana’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center that provides patient care, and is one of only 69 in the nation. The IU Health System, headquartered at IUPUI, includes 17 hospitals and multiple clinics throughout the state with 2.7 million patient encounters annually. The FSPH also has strong ties with multiple other hospital systems throughout the state and region.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a PhD and either 1) an established track record of funded studies and peer-reviewed publications in the area of public health informatics or population health data science, or 2) recently completed a PhD program or postdoctoral fellowship in which they conducted public health informatics or population health data science related research.
We seek eager, junior faculty candidates to join our productive and collaborative department, which seeks to improve population health outcomes for Indiana and the world.
Candidates with a PhD in public health informatics, health informatics, or biomedical informatics are preferred.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, reference list and research agenda to the Search Committee online at: http://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/8205.
