Description of the video:
00:05
welcome i'm dr cindy stone with the iu
00:07
fairbanks school of public health and
00:09
i'm the program director for the
00:11
mph in health policy and management i'm
00:14
going to go through a little bit about
00:15
our school and about our program
00:19
so what is public health it's the vision
00:21
of public health is really to have
00:22
healthy people living in healthy
00:24
communities
00:27
our masters of public health curriculum
00:29
is a 45 credit program
00:32
it has
00:33
12 credits in our core classes and then
00:36
it has concentration required classes it
00:39
has six hours of practicum and we'll
00:41
talk a little bit about some of the
00:42
things that students have done for those
00:44
experiences
00:46
and then has some electives and students
00:48
can take our
00:50
program two years as a full-time student
00:52
or three years as part-time student
00:56
we're primarily focused in evening
00:58
in person or hybrid and online
01:01
formats
01:05
uh here's the different concentrations
01:07
that we have and as i mentioned i'm
01:08
going to talk about health policy and
01:10
management
01:12
we also do have dual concentrations with
01:15
our different
01:16
within our school so for the health
01:19
policy management you can also do that
01:20
with epidemiology or with social
01:22
behavioral science or environmental
01:24
health or public health informatics
01:28
and then we also have dual degree
01:30
programs with the school of medicine
01:32
school of dentistry the law school you
01:35
can do a master's of health
01:36
administration with a master's of public
01:38
health that's both degrees are within
01:41
my department in health policy and
01:42
management
01:44
and we also have
01:46
the mba and mha program and the msw mph
01:49
program and also with our department and
01:53
philosophy which is in bioethics and
01:55
kinesiology
01:58
there's a variety of topics that we
01:59
study within public health certainly
02:01
everything's
02:02
been focused on coronavirus over the
02:04
last almost two years
02:07
we've also had students working on other
02:09
infectious diseases
02:11
influenza ebola measles zika so public
02:14
health is involved in many different
02:17
fighting many different infectious
02:19
diseases
02:20
we also work with a lot of chronic
02:22
diseases helping to stop people
02:24
from smoking or from not starting to
02:26
smoke
02:27
i'm working on a diabetes impact project
02:30
we have folks looking at cardiovascular
02:32
disease
02:33
asthma emergency preparedness
02:35
environmental health issues
02:37
so you can study lots of different
02:39
topics within public health
02:42
you can also look at other more health
02:44
prevention focused things looking at
02:47
healthy nutrition healthy pregnancies
02:50
mental health family planning
02:53
maternal child health injury prevention
02:56
so we work in a lot of different areas
03:00
i mentioned that we have a practicum
03:01
experience requirement
03:03
and for our internship that's 240 hours
03:07
and students
03:08
can really individualize that experience
03:11
if there's a particular agency that you
03:13
would like to have experience with we
03:14
can help negotiate that
03:16
we have people that work with the county
03:18
health department the state health
03:19
department local hospitals
03:21
you can also do international
03:23
experiences or experiences in other
03:25
parts of the country i had a student
03:27
within the last year or two who worked
03:29
in washington dc
03:31
with the
03:32
american association of county and city
03:35
health officials
03:37
and then we have a final project or
03:39
capstone which is also a practicum
03:40
experience
03:42
with that project you work in small
03:45
groups and it's a project that we work
03:48
with with a community partner
03:50
and have a paper and poster presentation
03:52
as part of that experience
03:56
we're lucky in indianapolis to have lots
03:58
of community agencies that we can work
04:00
with for those practical experiences and
04:02
for some of our
04:04
applied learning experiences within our
04:06
courses
04:07
we work with the local hospitals i
04:10
mentioned the health department
04:12
we work with eskenazi health
04:14
um so there's there's lots of
04:17
we're lucky to have so many agencies
04:18
that are based right here
04:22
uh here are some additional partners
04:24
that we've done projects with our simon
04:26
cancer center center for urban health
04:28
center for aging research our bowen
04:31
center for workforce research regan
04:33
street institute the center for
04:35
children's health services
04:36
indiana health information exchange and
04:39
our clinical and translational science
04:41
institute
04:44
then we also have a variety of
04:45
governmental agencies that we we've done
04:47
projects with
04:49
our state health department family and
04:50
social services agency our department of
04:53
environmental management our marion
04:55
county public health department and then
04:57
other local health departments in
04:58
surrounding counties i've had students
05:00
work most instantly
05:02
with rush county and montgomery county
05:06
we also have access to do projects with
05:08
our not-for-profit partners such as the
05:11
american heart association american
05:13
cancer society diabetes and alzheimer's
05:15
association
05:18
so we're like we're we're in a great
05:20
position to have all of those agencies
05:22
as well as five large hospital systems
05:27
our internships have also been done with
05:29
the center for urban women indiana rural
05:31
health association iu health with some
05:34
of our federally qualified health
05:36
centers
05:37
eskenazi health and school of medicine
05:39
school of nursing and our center of
05:42
for health policy which is based within
05:44
our department
05:45
most recently students have been working
05:48
on covid related projects helping to
05:51
look at different data and doing
05:53
analysis and summaries for some of our
05:56
community partner agencies
05:59
and then some of our recent capstone
06:02
practicums we worked with saint vincent
06:04
oncology group and did an assessment of
06:06
needs
06:08
particularly to try and get more
06:09
minority
06:11
residents to participate in some of
06:12
their mobile health units
06:14
and we also as i said worked with russia
06:17
and montgomery county helping with some
06:19
assessments for their accreditation work
06:22
we've done iu health interviews for
06:24
community benefits
06:25
this current semester students are doing
06:29
assessment of parks in our diabetes
06:31
impact project neighborhoods looking at
06:34
the status of the parks for kinds of
06:37
equipment that are available
06:39
the use of the parks
06:41
how safe the parks are
06:43
and what other kind of amenities or
06:45
services could be added or updated in
06:47
the parts to increase usage to improve
06:50
physical activity
06:52
access for the residents in those
06:53
neighborhoods
06:57
and then after our mph students have
06:59
been able to get into additional
07:01
graduate programs medical school
07:03
podiatry school law school they've
07:05
completed different phd programs we have
07:08
students working in our local and state
07:10
health departments at the indiana rural
07:12
health association and some of the not
07:14
for profits and local hospitals within
07:17
indiana and out of state
07:20
we also do have global opportunities
07:22
available although travel has been on
07:25
hold through covid we hope to resume
07:27
them as soon as possible these can be
07:30
used as electives within our our program
07:34
we have spring break trips that go to
07:36
london and geneva and then summer
07:39
programs that have gone to sweden
07:40
colombia and china we also have have had
07:43
students do internships in morocco over
07:45
the summer
07:46
and previously students have gone to
07:48
kenya rwanda and ecuador
07:51
i was able to go with students to sweden
07:53
in 2019
07:55
we have had a really fabulous time based
07:57
in stockholm we had the opportunity to
08:00
meet with
08:01
local and regional health officials
08:04
at all different levels of health
08:06
provision so we we met with some
08:08
hospital folks at their large trauma
08:10
facility we met with folks out in the
08:13
regional public health planning agency
08:16
we were able to visit some long-term
08:17
care
08:19
units and see how
08:21
they live one was particularly
08:22
interesting because they had
08:24
residents in long-term care also
08:26
residents getting short-term rehab
08:28
therapy and then students living there
08:31
as apartments so they had
08:33
many different ages living together in
08:35
in the one um one facility it was
08:38
really a set around a beautiful garden
08:44
and some of the places that students
08:45
have gone to after graduation as you can
08:48
see from this list is quite varied
08:50
working in
08:51
disaster preparedness legislative policy
08:54
work
08:55
health promotion and program evaluation
08:58
health center administration mental
09:00
health research
09:02
there's really
09:03
mph is a very well recognized degree and
09:06
students are able to
09:08
work in many many different areas
09:13
and that concludes my remarks
