Nicaragua Study Abroad Program

Join us for an in-depth introduction to the health system in Nicaragua. You'll have the opportunity to compare and contrast health systems in Nicaragua and the United States. This program is offered in collaboration with the IU Department of Family Medicine's ENLACE Project. As part of this study abroad program to Nicaragua, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • buildingSpend time out in the field visiting Nicaraguan health facilities, as well as historical and cultural sites
  • Participate in a meaningful service project in which you'll construct compositing latrines to improve publicand environmental health in the rural community of Zacataloza
  • Gain a heightened awareness of global public health issues
  • Hone your understanding of infrastructure development and deepen your cultural competencies while fostering a lifelong commitment to social advocacy and engagement

This study abroad experience is a 3 credit hour spring course entitled, Nicaragua: Health Systems Around the World. All participants will be required to enroll in one of the following courses if accepted into the program:

PBHL-H450 (Undergraduate)

PBHL-H670 (Graduate)


Open to Indiana University students in good academic standing who meet these criteria:

  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Although designed for students with a special interest in health, students of all majors and IU campuses are welcome to apply
  • Graduate students from the Fairbanks School of Public Health may be permitted to attend with permission of the instructor (supplemental coursework will be assigned)
  • Attend all four pre-trip meetings on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis
    • Meeting 1 | January 13, 2017 | 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    • Meeting 2 | January 27, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
    • Meeting 3 | February 17, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
    • Meeting 4 | March 3, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.


The program fee is $1,300 which covers:

  • Housingouthouse
  • Most meals
  • Transportation to scheduled learning activities
  • Some excursions
  • Some tours and entrance fees

Additional expenses will include:

  • Airfare of approximately $800 for roundtrip transportation to Nicaragua (students will arrange their own flights).
  • Spending money for meals, excursions, and other incidentals.
  • Study Abroad fees of $82 for the international study fee and $30 for insurance.
  • Tuition and related fees to cover the required three-credit hour course (amount will vary based upon residency status and full/part-time status); visit the IUPUI cost estimator to determine how the three additional credits will impact your Bursar bill for Spring 2017.

How to Apply

A total of 20 students will be accepted into the program. Preference will be given to public health undergratudate students, however, public health graduate students and undergraduate students of other majors are welcome to apply. Here's what you need to do to secure your spot:
