In this audience participation talk, John Wiesman, DrPH, MPH, will discuss the science and art of passing statewide legislation to raise the legal age of sale for tobacco and vaping products from 18 years to 21 years. The policy rationale for and against raising the legal age will be discussed. Perhaps more fascinating will be an insider’s look into how a bill really becomes a law.
Dr. Wiesman was appointed Washington’s secretary of health by Governor Jay Inslee in April 2013. Major efforts now underway at the Department of Health under his leadership include: End AIDS Washington, identifying and funding foundational public health services, and implementing the Governor’s executive order reducing suicides and preventing rearm injuries and deaths.
Dr. Weisman has been passionate about public health since reading a 1983 Time magazine article about disease detectives. He started his public health career in Connecticut in 1986 and has since worked in four local public health departments in Washington and Connecticut.
Today, Dr. Weisman holds faculty appointments at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health where he earned his DrPH, and the University of Washington School of Public Health. He received his MPH in chronic disease epidemiology from Yale University, and his BA in biology from Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
