The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health presented Outrun the Sun (OTS) with the IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Award for generously endowing a scholarship for students enrolled in an epidemiology program. Outrun the Sun’s mission is to support skin cancer education and melanoma research. This scholarship provides unique opportunities for students at the school to engage with faculty as they pursue work on melanoma and skin cancer research.
Founded in Indianapolis, OTS is Indiana's only nonprofit organization supporting skin cancer education and melanoma research. OTS has funded 23 melanoma researchers nationwide who actively seek new therapies and a cure for melanoma. The organization also partners with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana Department of Education, Girl Scout councils nationwide, the Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, and more in order to educate children and adults about sun safety and skin cancer prevention. The Indiana Cancer Consortium and the American Academy of Dermatology also recognized OTS for its achievements.
