Publications on Pharmacoepidemiology of Cancer
Huilin Tang, research associate at the Department of Epidemiology, and his mentors, Drs. Yiqing Song and Jiali Han, recently published six pharmacoepidemiology research articles regarding medication use and cancer risk. Despite efficacious anti-metabolic actions by certain medications, cancer concerns have been growing about the long-term use of such medications. They have systematically searched the databases of medical literature and clinical trials registries and quantitatively synthesized the evidence about the associations between several antidiabetic and antihypertensive drugs and risk of overall cancer or site-specific cancer. Their findings raise a cautionary flag about the potential impact by use of some medications on increasing risk of skin cancer or bladder cancer. Such findings will not only help physicians and patients to better understand the risk when choosing these medicines but also stimulate further long-term postmarketing drug safety surveillance as well as research on their potential carcinogenicity and underlying mechanisms.
