Summer Institute in Public Health Informatics, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics
Introduction to SQL for Public Health
- Location: Virtual only
- Dates/Time: Monday, August 5-Friday, August 9; 8 a.m.-noon

- Description: Prior experience with SQL is not required for this course. Students will be introduced to relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL), and will learn how to interact with databases using SQL. The course will cover key statements, operators, and functions needed for effective use in public health settings. Students will have access to a relational database to practice these skills. The course will be interactive each day and the instructors will lead virtual and students through using these tools on their own computers.
Using Data Effectively for Public Health Decisions

- Description: This course will cover practical issues related to using data in public health settings, including overview of HIPAA, understanding local, state, and federal data sources, IRBs, tools for visualizing data and creating graphics, communicating with the media and the public, presenting results in conferences, and grant writing. The course will be interactive and students will work on developing products such as an infographic or a press release.
Getting Things Done in R
- Location: Hine Hall IP 118 (IUPUI campus)

- Description: Prior experience with R is not required. Students will be led through the process of installing R, how to use it with a real world data set, and useful applications including ggplot, R markdown, and the basics of R Shiny. The course will be interactive each day and the instructors will lead virtual and in-person students through using R on their own computers.
Each student is encouraged to bring a laptop to participate in the interactive learning sessions.
With a strong focus by the CDC on data modernization efforts, new educational opportunities for working public health professionals are needed to enhance the workforce in state and local health departments.
These short courses were developed in collaboration with state and local public health organizations. Courses will be offered in-person and virtually. Each course will consist of approximately 15-20 hours of instruction time.
Students will receive a certificate of completion upon completing all course requirements.
